The Path / Madaura

Stage 02 · The Path

The group, the spark that grows.

Madaura.
The first journey
away from home.

Augustine leaves Tagaste to continue his studies. Like a spark beginning to grow, this stage represents the enthusiasm of childhood in the encounter with Jesus.

Augustine's step

Year 366 · Madaura, Numidia.

Here Augustine
leaves home.

Once his time in Tagaste is complete, Augustine continues his studies in Madaura. It is his first time leaving home, his first real contact with a wider world. He is still a boy, but he is already beginning to ask questions and forge friendships beyond the family circle.

The participants are boys and girls aged 10 to 12 who have received at least one sacrament of Christian initiation and continue along the itinerary. The book symbolises the Word and the knowledge that begins to kindle the heart.

Stage objective

Building a sense
of belonging.

To plant in them a feeling of group identity and belonging to the Movement, through the Augustinian values — especially that of community.

Four steps
towards the group.

What we live in Madaura:
the first bonds that form community.

i.

My group, my people

Recognising faces, names, and stories. Beginning to say "my people" with meaning, not just as a label.

ii.

Augustinian values

Interiority, friendship, the search for truth, and community. Four words learned by living them.

iii.

Sacraments and prayer

Continuing the sacramental itinerary, calmly preparing for the next steps of Christian initiation.

iv.

Safe accompaniment

The group leader is trained and carefully selected, following the Movement's safeguarding guidelines for minors.

Friendship is not true unless you yourself make it between those who cling to one another.

Saint Augustine  ·  Confessions, IV
